Redlight terapy

What Are Red Light, NIR, and IR Light Therapies?

Red light, Near-Infrared (NIR), and Infrared (IR) light therapy are advanced forms of phototherapy that expose the body to specific wavelengths of light with the aim of supporting the body's natural biological processes.

Although these three types of light therapy are closely related, they differ in how deeply the light penetrates the body and which tissues are primarily affected.

Red Light (approximately 600–700 nm)

Red light primarily affects the upper layers of the skin and is commonly used for skin care and regeneration. The treatment may support the skin's natural repair processes and contribute to a healthier, more even-looking complexion.

Near-Infrared Light – NIR (approximately 700–900 nm)

NIR light penetrates deeper into the body than visible red light and can reach muscles, tendons, and joints. For this reason, it is often used to support recovery, physical performance, and deeper tissue health.

Infrared Light – IR (above approximately 900 nm)

IR light is more readily converted into heat and is commonly used in infrared saunas and therapeutic heating systems. The gentle warmth may support circulation and promote relaxation in muscles and tissues.

How Does Light Therapy Work?

When the body is exposed to specific wavelengths of light, the energy is absorbed by the mitochondria—the structures often referred to as the "powerhouses" of the cells. Mitochondria produce the energy that cells require for repair, maintenance, and normal function.

Rather than introducing medications or chemicals into the body, light therapy works by supporting the body's own biological processes.

Benefits of Red Light Therapy

Red light therapy is a gentle, non-invasive treatment used by individuals, clinics, and professional athletes around the world.

Potential benefits may include:

✔ Support for the skin's natural collagen production

✔ Improved skin texture and radiance

✔ Reduced appearance of fine lines and uneven skin tone

✔ Support for the body's natural healing processes

✔ Relief from minor skin irritations

✔ Enhanced recovery following physical activity

✔ Reduced muscle soreness and stiffness

✔ General support for wellness and regeneration

Red light therapy is particularly well suited for skin-related applications and more superficial tissue structures.

Benefits of NIR and IR Light Therapy

NIR and IR light therapies work deeper within the body and are therefore often used for concerns involving muscles, joints, and connective tissues.

Deep Tissue Support

The longer wavelengths allow the light to penetrate further into the body, reaching structures that traditional red light cannot effectively influence.

Recovery and Physical Performance

NIR and IR light therapies are frequently used by athletes and active individuals as part of their recovery strategy. Many users report reduced muscle soreness and faster recovery after intense exercise.

Muscles and Joints

These therapies are commonly used to support:

  • Sore muscles
  • Stiff joints
  • Overuse injuries
  • Chronic muscle tension
  • Recovery after physical activity

Improved Circulation

Local blood flow may be supported, helping transport oxygen and nutrients to tissues more efficiently.

Wellness and Mental Clarity

Research continues to investigate how specific near-infrared wavelengths may help support nervous system function and certain cognitive processes.

Who Can Benefit from Light Therapy?

Athletes and Active Individuals

Runners, cyclists, strength athletes, and other physically active people often incorporate light therapy into their recovery routines.

People with Sedentary Occupations

For those experiencing tension in the neck, shoulders, or lower back due to prolonged sitting, NIR and IR light therapy may serve as a useful complement to movement, exercise, and ergonomic improvements.

Individuals Focused on Healthy Aging

Many people use light therapy as part of a broader wellness strategy aimed at supporting recovery, vitality, and the body's natural regenerative processes.

Light Therapy at Dansk Trykkammer Center

At Dansk Trykkammer Center, we combine advanced Red Light, NIR, and IR Light Therapy with our other treatment modalities, including Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT), molecular hydrogen therapy, nutritional guidance, and thermography.

Our goal is to create the best possible conditions for the body's natural ability to recover, regenerate, and function optimally through a gentle, evidence-informed, and holistic approach.
